Wholesome Health Launches Water, Sanitation and Hygiene(WASH) campaign in the Buea

After feasibility studies conducted by the Wholesome Health Promotion (WHP) Team in Cameroon, the Board of Directors unanimously voted that our program for 2023 will be a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene(WASH) campaign in the Buea Town neighborhood in Buea, Southwest Province, which is the epicenter of recent flash floods and mudslides in the area. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the floods and mudslides have destroyed critical drinking water supply infrastructure, with water catchments destroyed and water supply pipes broken in the affected neighborhoods, and affected about 4000 inhabitants.
To help alleviate improve the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene situation in the area , WHP will (1) drill a 10,000 liter-capacity water bore hole at the Buea Town Integrated Health Centre and (2) organize a Food Safety campaign to educate community stakeholders on how to ensure food safety in the current circumstances.

The Buea Town Integrated Health Center is the lone health facility within Buea Town Health Area, which covers a population of about 15,000 inhabitants. To be fully functional, the center needs up to 30,000 liters of water daily. Unfortunately, due to an intermittent water supply made worse by the destruction of critical infrastructure, the center gets no more than half of that amount on any given day. The borehole will therefore help alleviate the water crisis for both the health center and the neighboring community (that includes a prominent market, an elementary school, a high school and a village).
On May 27th the WHP Team visited the Health Center to formally launch the borehole project. Work will begin in the last quarter of 2023.
